One Republican Joins Democrats Against Military Healthcare Bill and Five Democrats Voted With the Republicans

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure restricting federal military healthcare coverage for gender-transition procedures, with a single Republican member breaking party lines to vote against the measure.

The amendment, introduced by Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina to the National Defense Authorization Act, passed by a vote of 219 to 208. The measure explicitly prohibits TRICARE, the military healthcare system, from funding or covering gender-related surgeries and treatments for service members and their dependents.

House voting records show that 213 Republicans supported the measure, while Delegate Kimberlyn King-Hinds of the Northern Mariana Islands stood out as the lone Republican vote in opposition. As a territorial delegate, King-Hinds is permitted to cast votes on legislative amendments on the House floor.

She joined 207 Democrats and one independent who voted against the amendment. Conversely, five Democratic lawmakers crossed party lines to vote with the Republican majority in favor of the prohibition.
