Meyer: Tone deaf Bob Ferguson blames Trump for high gas prices in WA, data tells a different story

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson is back to blaming everybody other than himself for pain at the pump in his state.
“$342. That’s how much a new congressional report shows Washington households have paid in higher gas prices since President Trump started his war in Iran,” said Ferguson on X.
Ferguson is following in the footsteps of his predecessor Jay Inslee by holding others responsible for the very problems he caused. Yes, the conflict in Iran has temporarily risen global oil prices (though those are stabilizing), but a deeper look shows state-level policy is mostly to blame.
Other states pay much less for gas than WA
If turmoil in the Strait of Hormuz was solely to blame for Washington’s high gas prices, then why is that its neighbor Idaho is paying nearly a dollar less per gallon, according to AAA? A new report from the Institute for Energy Research found that red states as a whole are paying 55 cents per gallon less than blue states.
The report also found that Washington is among the worst offenders for high gas prices. In fact, if you take out Washington, Oregon, California, and Hawaii then the difference between blue and red states is only 0.09 cents per gallon.
The report concluded that gas taxes and taxes on carbon emissions ultimately shoulder most of the blame for high gas prices. Sound familiar?
Bob Ferguson is gaslighting you
If Bob Ferguson and his Democratic colleagues were actually concerned about high gas prices then they would suspend the Climate Commitment Act or repeal it altogether. The CCA adds roughly 50 cents per gallon of gas and that’s on top of a gas tax that is third highest in the nation, according to the Tax Foundation.
Republicans have urged Democrats in Olympia to put a pause on both the CCA and the gas tax, but to no avail. They argue that such a proposal would deprive the state of vital funds for infrastructure even though the state is collecting a record amount of tax revenue. In other words, they would rather tax you into oblivion than get their fiscal house in order.
Don’t let Bob Ferguson gaslight you. If he really cared about the cost of gas, he would take a long look in the mirror instead of blaming Trump.
