Make America STATES Again

Educate Your State Legislators

By Peter Rykowski

State governments have the greatest impact on Americans’ everyday lives, legislating on a wide range of topics, including education, election integrity, gun control, medical freedom, and income and property taxes. Any effort to restore limited, constitutional government must involve the states — especially since state officials are duty-bound to nullify unconstitutional acts of the federal government.

Accordingly, it’s essential that we educate our state legislators about state sovereignty, as well as nullification and a republican form of government. With most state legislative sessions having adjourned for the year, now is an excellent time to meet with them.

We have developed several action tools to help educate state officials and, by extension, increase the effectiveness of your efforts. The “Make America STATES Again” reprint, featuring the cover-story articles from the October 14, 2024 issue of The New American, discusses key principles such as nullification and a republican form of government, and highlights the state Legislative Scorecards as an additional tool for educating legislators and voters. We’ve also created a “Make America STATES Again” pamphlet and slim jim based on the reprint, providing the same information in a more compact form.

We must not let national politics distract us from these efforts or make us complacent. Although Congress and the presidency are currently controlled by “conservative” Republicans, they have done little to eliminate the myriad unconstitutional federal agencies and policies. Leadership in reining in federal overreach must come from the states via constitutional enforcement.

The John Birch Society has “Make America STATES Again” article reprints, pamphlets, and slim jims that can be put to good use educating state legislators and fellow citizens about state sovereignty. Specifically, please do the following:

  • Contact your state legislators, and urge them to reassert state sovereignty by nullifying unconstitutional laws and rejecting federal funding. In addition to emailing and calling their offices, set up in-person meetings with them and their staffs, and speak to them at town halls and other events they attend.
  • Give copies of the “Make America STATES Again” reprint, pamphlet, and slim jim to your state legislators, their staffs, and your fellow citizens.
  • Distribute state Legislative Scorecards also available from The John Birch Society in conjunction with the above materials.
