Anthropic Makes Stunning Admission As It Pushes For Grand Public Entrance

AI giant Anthropic filed paperwork for an initial public offering (IPO) Monday, the first step in what might be a grand entrance onto the Nasdaq. However, the company made a stunning admission in its investor pitch.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Anthropic’s IPO could be valued at an eye-watering $2 trillion, a figure that would make it one of the largest public companies in the world. But Anthropic’s filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) also revealed a deeply contradictory message about the technology they wish to unleash on the world. Anthropic lost a whopping $80 billion in the first six months of 2026, but is pressing on for an IPO, which would give them a much-needed financial lift. Throughout the SEC filing, however, the company provided a mishmash of utopian and dystopian messages. Their technology could lead to unprecedented economic growth; it could also destroy civilization.

Anthropic said that they “plan to evaluate the safety of each stage of training” with new AI models, and that they might “delay or pause a stage when we are not confident in our safety measures for that stage.”

“These judgments are particularly consequential because, as AI systems become more capable, the potential severity of harm from misaligned or misused models increases correspondingly, and a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers and policymakers, have raised concerns that sufficiently advanced AI systems could pose catastrophic or existential risks to society if not developed and deployed responsibly,” the company wrote in its SEC filing.

“Our safety-focused approach is designed in part to mitigate such risks, but there can be no assurance that our efforts will be successful or that the broader AI industry will adopt similar safeguards,” it added.

In other words, Anthropic is asking investors to trust that they are the most reliable, cautious AI lab on the market. But they are also warning that their attempts to safeguard it might be futile, and that the technology could lead to doomsday and destroy humans for good. How many companies looking to go public have ever admitted that their product could kill off the human species? Until now, it would appear none.

Anthropic also outlined its main predicament ahead of a potential IPO: they need to move fast before they financially crumble; but they also need to convince everyone they can move fast — safely — with a technology they admit could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to society.”

“If the market for our models, platform, and applications develops more slowly than we expect or declines, our growth may slow or stall, and our business, financial condition, and results of operations could be adversely affected,” the company wrote.
