The $4 Million Question: Thornton vs. Whitefish Credit Union — What Happens Next?

Has fraud been committed upon the court of the 11th Judicial District Flathead County, Montana?

By Casey Whalen

The latest chapter in the long-running legal battle between Dennis and Donna Thornton and Whitefish Credit Union took place in court on August 18, 2026.

The hearing focused on the Thorntons’ request for relief from a prior judgment based on their allegation that fraud was committed on the court. The judge authorized the Thorntons to conduct formal discovery—including requests for documents and up to 10 interrogatories—before an eventual evidentiary hearing.

The credit union disputes the Thorntons’ characterization of the underlying debt and maintains that the debt was released when the warranty deeds were recorded in 2018.

Watch the full hearing and hear the arguments directly from the courtroom as this complicated case moves into its next phase.
