Idaho Property Tax

Idaho Property Tax

By Darryl & Sheila Ford

For at least 3 years, our legislature has neglected to enact effective property tax relief. They are failing to represent the people who elected them. Their feeble increase in homeowners’ exemption hardly helped. Anyone concerned about exponentially rising property tax should write a short, hand-written letter to their State senator and representatives, and each member of the Senate Local Government and Taxation Committee telling them we expect bills for the purpose of reducing property tax to be brought up at the beginning of January’s session and passed before this session ends.

One problem is that value is assessed based on selling price of other properties. That is hypothetical and unrealistic. A property’s value should be what the current owner paid for it, not what someone recently paid for some other property.

Also, developers must be charged impact fees adequate to cover the increase in services caused by their development.

The only way to impress legislators with how many people care about this problem is to flood their desks with hand-written mail. Time and postage spent will be rewarded with meaningful savings if we can get them off their butts.

Please, please consider sending a few sentences of your own thoughts, or any of those above to be waiting for them when the session begins.
